TG helps 9,000 Texas students pursue STEM careers

Round Rock, TX — This August, 2,000 Texas students will receive up to $2,500 each to help prepare for a career in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). These students will join more than 7,000 others who have benefited from TG’s $25 million contribution to the Texas STEM Challenge Scholarship Program over the past four years. To date, these scholarships have served students at 19 colleges across the state, with the final cohort of students poised to receive awards this fall.

“Expanding educational opportunities for students in Texas helps ensure a bright future for our state,” said James Patterson, TG’s president and CEO. “We’re proud to support the T-STEM Scholarship program and to encourage more students to pursue degrees, certificates, and careers that will continue to build on Texas’ leadership in innovation and job creation.”

In addition to providing direct support for high-achieving, full-time students, the Texas-STEM Challenge Scholarship Program requires colleges to partner with local business and industry to identify local employment needs in STEM occupations and to develop part-time employment opportunities for scholarship recipients.

Since 2012, colleges have competed for available funds through the T-STEM program, with the largest number of scholarships awarded through the Texas State Technical College System, Alamo Community College District, San Jacinto Community College, and Austin Community College. The program is administered in partnership with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
