Questions on Trellis Loans

There are many questions around student loan interest and payments due to recent presidential announcements and new legislation. We are working to keep everyone up to date on the impact to Trellis borrowers.

Please note that while Trellis loans originated with commercial lenders, as a guarantor under this federal program, we still adhere to the Department of Education regulations for the FFEL Program, which set interest rates, terms, and available payment programs and benefits for these loans.

Current information

Based on the US Department of Education announcement on March 30, 2021, which extended CARES federal student loan benefits to FFEL loans, Trellis is currently updating interest rates to 0% and refunding involuntary payments, both retroactive to March 13, 2020. Borrowers may also request a refund of voluntary payments from this same timeframe by visiting the myTrellis website and logging into their account. Please visit https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/coronavirus for more information.

Trellis borrowers are impacted in the following ways:

  • Collection activities will not resume on your loan(s) until after December 31, 2022.
  • You are not required to make payments on your defaulted loan(s) until after December 31, 2022.
  • Any defaulted loans you have with Trellis Company will be charged 0% interest between March 13, 2020 and December 31, 2022. Trellis is currently in the process of making those 0% interest adjustments.
  • Any involuntary loan payments, such as income tax refunds and wage garnishments payments made to Trellis Company between March 13, 2020 and December 31, 2022 are being or have been refunded.
  • You may request a refund of your voluntary payments made between March 13, 2020 and December 31, 2022. To request a refund of your voluntary payments, submit the “Refund Request for Voluntary Payments” form at https://www.mytrellis.org/.

We continue to work with the Department of Education and monitor their announcements for the most recent information. We will provide updates as they become available so you are able to make informed decisions.
